The football season is wrapping up, I wanted to go back and share some photos from the start of the season. Every year, our newspaper does something called The Football Tab Series in which we highlight high school student athletes across the Yakima Valley. This year, we chose the theme, ‘School Spirit.’
First off, this project would not have been possible without our tremendous sport department. Each shoot had to be different, and yet keep a consist look. Sometimes the stories were great…and sometimes they weren’t, but it was my job to make sure – regardless of the story – to execute each photo better than the last.
What I found the most difficult was the organizational aspect to this project. High school kids are typically on vacation, have jobs, busy with practice, etc. I had to shoot about three athletes a week and that was a challenge. When it came to the shooting, it was easy.
Well not really but it’s easier than the calling, the scheduling, and the rescheduling part. During every shoot, I did keep one thing in mind: “Keep It Simple.” I tried to not go overboard with the light set up, and I had a vision for each shoot. If I got that I played around using different angles/lenses and changed up the lighting scheme.
I really enjoyed this series, and I’m glad that they turned out well in print. It was a fun time photographing these kids for the series and during the regular season. Here are some of my favorites:
